My Family’s Chinese Medical Soup and my Affinity for the Goji Berry

Chinese SoupWhile growing up, my Dad would often make a chinese soup which he would refer to as ‘Chinese Medical Soup’. It contained various weird chinese herbs…let’s just say that this soup was an acquired taste! So I wasn’t exactly jumping up and down to drink it. But my dad would often remind me that it was very good for the eyes and general well-being, and even insisted that the soup would give me radiant skin. At the time I just dismissed it as old wives’ tales, and would very politely carry on with this chinese family soup drinking tradition we had going. One of the medical ingredients contained in the soup would years later be touted in the West as one of the top Superfoods. And that one ingredient was the Goji Berry. Little did I know that, one day, I would also be putting it in my fruit spreads!

Superfood Benefits of the Goji Berry

She may be small but the goji berry is a powerhouse for health and vitality. These little red berries are chock full of nutrients. Goji berries have more vitamin C than oranges, more beta-carotene than carrots and more iron than steak, weight for weight.

However, the most important aspect of Goji berries is that they are a very rich source of antioxidants. Antioxidants are crucial to keeping you young. Goji berries are also known for improving vision and eyesight and for giving you clearer, brighter skin.

On this subject, here’s an ancient chinese story that’s been passed down the generations. In ancient times there lived a very healthy old man. When people asked him why he was very healthy and looked younger, he replied “I eat like other people, except for the fact that I often eat goji berries, as I have a goji tree in my backyard.” Later on, Chinese physicians discovered that goji berries strengthen the kidneys, balance the body and have anti-aging properties.

In Asia, goji berries have been eaten for generations in the hopes of living longer. Goji berries have long been a very important herb in traditional chinese medicine. Chinese doctors often use this herb in the Chinese medicine formula to balance and strengthen the body, and to treat many common health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, fever, and age-related eye problems. The Chinese also believe that Goji berries can considerably enhance libido and improve sex life. Wink wink, wry smile.
